An AI office has been set up within the European Commission. Made up of 140 experts, technology specialists, lawyers and economists, its aim is to implement the new European Union legislation governing artificial intelligence.

The AI Office is made up of several units:

• “Regulation and Compliance”, which coordinates the regulatory approach to facilitate the uniform application and enforcement of AI legislation throughout the Union, in close collaboration with the Member States. The unit will contribute to investigations and possible infringements, applying sanctions;
• AI safety, focusing on the identification of systemic risks associated with highly capable general-purpose models, possible mitigation measures, and evaluation and testing approaches;
• AI and Robotics Excellence, which supports and funds research and development to promote an ecosystem of excellence. It coordinates the GenAI4EU initiative, stimulating the development of models and their integration into innovative applications;
• “AI for societal good” to design and implement the AI office’s international engagement in AI for good, such as weather modeling, cancer diagnostics and digital twins for reconstruction;
• AI innovation and policy coordination, which oversees the execution of the EU’s AI strategy, tracks trends and investments, encourages AI adoption through a network of European digital innovation hubs and the creation of AI factories, and fosters an innovative ecosystem by supporting regulatory sandboxes

The AI Office will work closely with the European Artificial Intelligence Committee, made up of representatives from the member states. The office will include an advisory forum, representing a selection of stakeholders (industry, SMEs, academia, think tanks and civil society).
